Abstract: An identical, defined nutritional assessment procedure, including a questionnaire of symptoms potentially influencing wt loss was prospectively performed on 124 HIV infected patients (pts) and compared to results from 254 cancer pts (CA). Only favorable performance score (0-2) pts were studied. Those with ascites or chronic diarrhea requiring medication were excluded. Assessment results are presented in a table. Most parameters were surprisingly similar in pts with and without wt loss across the two diagnoses. Caloric intake was generally adequate and independent of wt loss results in both groups. Attention to other factors in addition to caloric intake and GI symptoms may be needed if the course of malnutrition in HIV or CA is to improve.
