Abstract: Never has one disease caused so much fuss in the debate over the rights of the individual and the safety of the community. AIDS has managed to bring out the worst in our irrational fears about the unknown, as well as to crystallise all our bigotry and prejudices. Knowledge about AIDS and how it spreads are essential to combating it.
