Abstract:
In the short time since the discovery of the retroviruses and their link to disease, a tremendous amount of information has been uncovered relating to these viruses, their genetic structures, their tissue and cellular targets, their modes of transmission, and their cytopathology in vitro and in vivo. Many of the features of the retroviruses are novel and complex. HIV infection and the spread of AIDS demonstrate the complexity of retrovirus pathogenesis and the challenge of finding workable therapy. Retroviruses and their role in human disease are reviewed in the following chapters: an historical perspective on retroviruses and human disease; facts and hypotheses derived from the study of bovine leukemia, an infectious cancer; biology of feline retroviruses; molecular aspects of feline leukemia virus pathogenesis; biology and pathogenesis of lentiviruses in ruminant animals; adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma; molecular biology of human T-leukemia virus type I; (HTLV-I; biologic significance of viral genes in its replication and leukemogenesis); molecular biology and pathogenesis of HTLV-II; epidemiology of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and AIDS; structure and function of human pathogenic retroviruses; immunology of AIDS and HIV infection; biology of HIV-related viruses; progress in the therapy of HIV infections; the clinical spectrum of HIV infection; and vaccine strategies for AIDS.
