Abstract:
Powerful molecular biologic approaches are increasing knowledge about normal growth processes, and major insights are being gained from direct investigations of the molecular basis of a number of genetically determined diseases and of chronic diseases such as cancer. An international workshop on bioengineered molecules was held in Rome on September 22, 1988, as part of the Serono Symposia. Topics included the hypothetical closed loop of delocalized noncovalent interaction in protein folding, bioengineering of superoxide dismutase and related enzymes (basic and clinical aspects), sterol carrier protein (ubiquitous protein in search of a function), reconstituted virus envelopes as tools for cellular engineering, assembly and glycosylation of the HIV receptor CD4, molecular approaches to the diagnosis of HIV-I infection in seronegative individuals at high risk, the polymerase chain reaction in human pathology, the Na+/H+ antiport and its role in cell regulation, biologic/pathologic role of Hageman factor, extracellular matrix components as markers of tumor biology and histogenesis, gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists in clinical practice, and retroviral vectors (new strategy for gene therapy).
