Abstract: Calves were inoculated with BIV to determine pathogenesis of this virus under controlled conditions. They were frequently examined for viremia, presence of antibodies to BIV and immunologic changes. Presence of viremia was monitored in vivo by PCR and in vitro by RT assays and syncytia formation. Antibody titers were studied by IFA. Immunologic changes were detected with analysis of Cd4-Cd8 ratio changes and health was monitored by physical examinations and CBCs. IFA antibody titers and syncytia formation appeared before viremia was detected using PCR techniques. Initially there was a Cd4-Cd8 ratio reversal similar to early changes seen in AIDS patients, with return to normal ratios soon thereafter. Inoculated animals have remained physically normal for 2 yr postinoculation. Based on our results, BIV may not be an immunodeficiency-inducing virus.
