Abstract: OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to value if adenosine deaminase activity may be useful as an early serologic marker of cerebral lesion in AIDS patients. METHODS: Adenosine deaminase activity was estimated in sera of three groups of subjects: A) 26 AIDS patients with cerebral lesion proved by computerized tomographic scan and/or magnetic resonance imaging (4 progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, 16 atrophy, 6 neurotoxoplasmosis); B) 5 AIDS patients without proved cerebral lesion; C) 20 blood donors as control. We used a colorimetric method with adsorbance determination at 620 nm. RESULTS: The mean value of adenosine deaminase activity in sera was: 38.7 +/- 10.8 U/1 in progressive multifocal leukoencefalopathy; 34.2 +/- 14.2 U/1 in atrophy; 61.1 +/- 18.6 U/1 in neurotoxoplasmosis; 19.8 +/- 8.2 U/1 in AIDS patients without cerebral lesion and 16.9 +/- 7.4 U/1 in controls. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Evaluation of adenosine deaminase activity in sera of AIDS patients may be an early laboratory marker of cerebral lesion and an easy parameter to value the trend of the actual lesions.
