Abstract: Serum IgE levels are increased in some congenital T-Cell deficiencies and autoimmune disorders. IgE synthesis is regulated by cooperation between T helper and B cells. Patients infected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) show an early increase in serum IgG and IgA, indicating and B-cell polyclonal activation. To determine IgE role in HIV infected children, we have measured serum total IgE (PRIST, paper immunosorbent test), normal control values between 0.4 and 90 ui/ml, (m+/- 2sd), in two groups of children. 1/ In 20 HIV seropositive asymptomatic children, older than 15 months. 2/ In 17 AIDS children, P-2 status (CDC 1987). In the first group a variable increase of immunoglobulin G and A was found, with normal serum levels of IgE. In the second group of children, serum IgG levels were between 2000 and 7000 mg/d1, IgA 200-500, and IgE level were normal, less than 90 ug/ml, in all children but one. Three out of 17 AIDS patients showed hypersensitivity reaction against milk proteins, studied by specific IgE and skin test. In conclusion, the pattern of T-cell disorder produced by HIV infection does not usually increase serum IgE levels. First type immune reactivity is preserved in HIV infected children.
