Abstract:
The Scripps Memorial Hospitals 13th Annual Cancer Symposium was held October 30-November 1, 1989, in La Jolla, CA. The five major sessions focused on breast cancer, new concepts, controversies in management of common malignancies, AIDS, and hematologic malignancies. Abstracts and papers on the following subjects are included: epidemiology of breast cancer; prognostic factors in breast cancer; initial management of clinically suspected breast malignancy; treatment of noninvasive breast cancer; current controversy in the conservative management of early breast cancer; node-negative breast cancer; approach to advanced breast cancer; biologic therapy of cancer; hematopoietic growth factors; monoclonal antibodies against the EGF receptor as a new model for antitumor therapy; options for bone marrow transplantation in patients (pts) with chronic myelogenous leukemia; new anticancer agents of clinical interest; the appropriateness of chemotherapy and radiation therapy for pts with non-small cell lung cancer; surgical adjuvant therapy of colon cancer; the necessity of adjuvant combined modality treatment for pts with cancer of the rectum; regional chemotherapy of hepatic metastases; the acceptance of intracavitary chemotherapy as primary therapy in ovarian cancer; the roles of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy in invasive bladder cancer; the role of irradiation in locally advanced colorectal and pancreatic cancer; clinical Stage I nonseminomatous testis cancer; melphalan and prednisone therapy for multiple myeloma; the role of radiation therapy in intermediate grade lymphomas; experimental antiviral therapy in AIDS; treatment of opportunistic infections in pts with AIDS; the merits of bone marrow transplantation for pts with lymphoma or Hodgkin's disease; appropriate uses of iv gammaglobulin; challenges in the management of low-grade lymphomas; lessons learned from the treatment of lymphomas of childhood; and reproductive and cardiopulmonary toxicity after cytotoxic therapy for lymphoma.
