Abstract: Abstracts are presented from the plenary and poster sessions of the symposium on transcriptional control of cell growth, held January 27 to February 3, 1990, in Keystone, CO, as part of the 19th Annual UCLA Symposia on Molecular and Cellular Biology. Discussions covered the three-dimensional structure of regulatory proteins, chromatin structure in transcriptional complexes, regulation of transcription in lower eukaryotes, basic transcription machinery in microbes and in higher eukaryotes, transcription factors in embryonic development, transcription factors induced by growth and differentiation, development of hematopoietic cell lineages, transcription factors involved in tissue determination and tissue-specific expression, regulated transcription factors, hormone receptors in transcription, transcription in microbes and lower eukaryotes, eukaryotic transcription, and tissue-specific regulated transcription factors. Specific topics included protein-nucleic acid interactions, Escherichia coli enhancer-receptor protein sigma-54, mammalian promoter- and enhancer-binding transcription factors, zinc finger proteins, structure and function of serum response factor, gene expression in response to tumor promoters, the Tax1 protein of human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-1, coupling of DNA repair to transcription, transregulatory proteins of varicella zoster virus interacting with oncogenes, promoter sequences of the human growth hormone gene, transcription in parvoviruses, growth-regulatory elements in the human ornithine decarboxylase gene, transcriptional control of an Ig kappa gene, the ATF transcription factor, transcriptional regulation of HIV-1, bidirectional transcription from the N-myc promoter, mRNA in human proliferating cells, c-myc protein exhibiting intrinsic protein kinase and phosphatase activities, control of c-myc expression, proteins that bind specifically to regulatory sequences in Drosophila Adh genes, retroviral insertions activating transcription, activity of the human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor gene promoter in human leukemia cell lines, c-fos expression and proliferation induced by ras, T-lymphomagenicity of the murine SL3-3 retrovirus, induction of macrophage differentiation, a stem cell-specific repressor of Moloney murine leukemia virus expression in embryonal carcinoma cells, insulin genes, and interferon-inducible transcription factors.
