Abstract: (Producer) In an effort to broaden the context from which to respond to AIDS, this conference explores the way societies have responded to grave threats to the public health, such as the plague, tuberculosis, polio, and venereal disease. Using the methods of the humanities to consider what human beings have said, done, thought, and created during past epidemics, the conference recognizes that how we think about AIDS shapes what we will do about AIDS. It is hoped that broader awareness of the myth and reality of other epidemics will help prevent us from victimizing those affected by AIDS.
