Abstract: The American Red Cross symposium on Hematopoietic Growth Factors in Transfusion Medicine, held May 10-11, 1989, in Bethesda, MD, consisted of 4 lecture and 2 poster sessions. Abstracts are presented for the following lectures: biology of hematopoiesis and synergy among hematopoietic growth factors; erythropoietin (EPO); human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF); G-CSF; M-CSF; the radioprotective and bone marrow reconstitutive effect of interleukin 1; retrovirally mediated transfer of genes into hematopoietic cells; interleukin 7--a lymphopoietic growth factor; cytokine regulation of megakaryocyte progenitor cells; EPO therapy in autologous blood donors; EPO therapy in AIDS; effect of recombinant human (rh) CSFs on hematopoietic reconstitution following autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT); hematopoietic growth factors and human leukemia; hematopoietic growth factor therapy for aplastic anemia; treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes with rhG-CSF--marrow hemopoietic and clinical results; the role of GM-CSF in treatment of AIDS; clinical uses of GM-CSF; effect of recombinant M-CSF on human monocyte-macrophage numbers and candidacidal activity in vitro; effect of transforming growth factor-beta 1 and T lymphocytes on the growth of peripheral blood progenitor cells; rGM-CSF in patients with poor graft function after BMT; tumor cytotoxicity of peripheral blood monocytes from BMT recipients following incubation with recombinant cytokines; depletion of T cells in preparation for allogeneic peripheral blood stem-cell transplantation; EPO-induced maturation of a GM-CSF-dependent human cell line; coordinate induction of c-jun, fibronectin receptor, and hck genes by M-CSF in nonproliferative human monocytes; a sensitive technique to monitor gene transfer and expression in bone marrow stem cells; successful treatment of the anemia of Gaucher's disease with human EPO; and effect of interleukin 3 on survival and proliferation of peripheral blood hematopoietic colony-forming cells in liquid culture.
