Abstract: This volume includes presentations made at the International Symposium on the Pathogenesis and Control of Viral Infections held in Beijing, China, in April 1989. Special attention was given to the compromised host and to new viruses. Contributions include the following: molecular biology of human retroviruses; genomic organization of the T-cell receptor; increase of circulating T-cells bearing the gamma-delta T-cell receptor in HIV infection; human diseases related to human T-lymphotropic virus-1 (pathogenesis and prevention); immunohistology of persistent generalized lymphadenopathy; immunomodulatory treatment of HIV infection; immunopathology of viral infections, the murine myocarditis model; murine myocardial-cell infection induced by Coxsackie virus B3; persistent infections by Coxsackie virus B3; long-term follow-up of viral myocarditis; cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in the immunocompromised host; mother-infant transmission of CMV infection; herpes simplex type 1 and type 2 infections in the compromised host; the polyomavirus genomic determinants for tissue-specific growth and transformation; hepatitis delta virus infection and disease; hepatitis B virus (pathogenesis and molecular biology); viral pathogenic studies of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in China; autoimmune mechanisms in viral infections; mechanisms of IgE synthesis and control by cytokines; a survey of antibodies against respiratory viruses and mycoplasma pneumoniae in asthmatic children; studies on infection with respiratory syncytial virus; immunologic status of children with recurrent respiratory infections; coronavirus infection in China; the child with recurrent respiratory infections; immunologic evaluation in patients with respiratory infections; host defense against infections and inflammations (role of the multifunctional interleukin-6/interferon [IFN]-beta2 cytokine); the IFN system; the role of macrophages in inflammation; study of the viral etiology of chronic cervicitis and its therapeutic response to a recombinant IFN; viral infections and thymic hormones, a new therapeutic approach; effect of in vivo thymic hormone administration on in vitro parameters of immune function in elderly patients; blood-derived and recombinant hepatitis B vaccines in China; attenuated live hepatitis A vaccine in humans; and viral infections in the immunocompromised host.
