Abstract:
The second annual meeting of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology was held September 15-17, 1989, in Chicago, IL. Before the meeting, a workshop was conducted on the use of iv immunoglobulins in pediatric patients with Kawasaki disease, AIDS/ARC, and cytomegalovirus infections; in bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients; and in neonatology. Plenary sessions focused on clinical manifestations and therapy of HIV infections in hemophiliacs (use of monoclonal clotting factors in treatment of hemophilia, carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis of hemophilia); new horizons and advances in sickle cell disease; advances in BMT (bone marrow cell manipulation, immunomagnetic purging of neuroblastoma cells [model for negative selection] and of stem cells [model for positive selection], T-cell purging for control of graft-vs-host disease in haploidentical related and unrelated BMT, 4HC purging as a pharmacologic model for negative selection); Langerhans cell histiocytosis (pathobiology and pathogenesis, morphologic findings in histiocytic syndromes, staging, clinical studies, and the roles of liver transplantation and cyclosporin in the treatment of pts with Langerhans cell histiocytosis); and pediatric hematology/oncology in the developing world (thalassemia in Sardinia, malignant lymphoproliferative disease and anemias of malnutrition and infectious disease in Africa, and supportive care for the child with cancer). Abstracts are provided for original research that centered on sickle cell disease, BMT, and chemotherapy in children.
