Abstract: By late 1988, the number of articles cataloged in the National Library of Medicine AIDS Bibliography reached nearly 500 per month. The present volume seeks to assemble the available information on the epidemiology of HIV-1 infection into a coherent framework, accessible to the largest possible number of professionals engaged in health sciences and health care and interested persons outside the field of health. The following topics are covered: HIV biology; pathophysiology of the immune system; serology; immunologic clinical manifestations; nervous system pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of HIV infection; general epidemiologic considerations; occurrence of HIV infection in homosexual men, heterosexuals, parenteral drug users, and recipients of blood and blood products; HIV-1 infection and AIDS in Africa and Haiti; perinatal HIV-1 infection; HIV-1 infection in low-risk populations; general considerations related to prevention; behavioral factors and intervention; chemotherapy and chemoprophylaxis; immunization; responses in the health care system; and responses in the legal system.
