Abstract:
Desmal epithelia are a pseudotype because of their mesodermal origin. Based on phylogeny and ontogeny, there are three distinct types: (1) epithelia of serous cavities (pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial), (2) endothelia of vessels (blood vessels in most animals with closed or mixed circulatory systems and lymph vessels in animals from jawless vertebrates to man), and (3) epithelia of synovial origin in vertebrates and possibly in some highly developed invertebrates with joints. Desmal epithelial neoplasms of vessels and of synovial origin are reviewed, including some aspects of related diseases. Topics include Kaposi's sarcoma, AIDS, angiosarcoma (malignant hemangioendothelioma), hemangiopericytoma, malignant synoviomas (synovial sarcomas), tendosynovial sarcoma, and malignant giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath. The etiology of certain diseases, such as Kaposi's sarcoma, and their epidemiology and relationship to more or less related disorders, such as AIDS or Burkitt's lymphoma, remain obscure. (69 Refs)
