Abstract: Since 1984, a great deal of progress has been made in combating the ever-increasing AIDS epidemic. This book aims to present the latest, rapid methods of diagnosing AIDS and opportunistic infections and to increase understanding of the pathogenesis of AIDS. The first three sections provide an overview of sexually transmitted diseases in homosexual men (nondiarrheal, including syphilis, Neisseria, and Chlamydia trachomatis; diarrheal, including gay bowel syndrome, bacterial diarrhea, parasitic infections, cryptosporidiosis, isosporiasis, and microsporidiosis; and others, including hepatitis B virus, herpes simplex virus, and cytomegalovirus infections). The fourth section, infectious and neoplastic complications of AIDS, covers AIDS etiology, CDC case definition for AIDS, AIDS and HIV infection, Kaposi's sarcoma and its treatment, neurology in AIDS, AIDS in the United States and in Europe, and occurrence and treatment of opportunistic infections in patients with AIDS. Immunologic evaluation methods and controls and the diagnosis of AIDS are also reviewed. Appendixes include three Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report supplements: (1) recommendations for prevention of HIV transmission in health care settings, (2) biosafety level criteria (laboratory and vertebrate animal), and (3) CDC cautionary notice for all human serum-derived reagents used as controls.
