Abstract: The number of reported cases of AIDS continues to grow alarmingly, making recognition of the diverse manifestations of this syndrome increasingly important. The present volume is an outgrowth of an extensive interchange of experience and ideas between members of the Departments of Radiology at the San Francisco General Hospital and the New York University-Bellevue Hospital Centers. These hospitals, situated in large diversely populated urban settings, have considerable experience in the radiologic diagnosis and management of patients (pts) with AIDS. Chapters cover the following topics: epidemiology, biology, and spectrum of clinical syndromes associated with HIV; neuroradiology of AIDS; pulmonary manifestations of AIDS; gastrointestinal radiology in AIDS pts; Kaposi's sarcoma, lymphoma, and other malignant neoplasms with similar radiographic features; pediatric AIDS; and handling AIDS pts in the radiology department. Additional information is provided in four appendices: the revised Centers for Disease Control case definition for AIDS, laboratory evidence for and against a diagnosis of HIV infection, definitive diagnostic methods for diseases indicative of AIDS, and suggested guidelines for presumptive diagnosis of diseases indicative of AIDS.
