Abstract: Molecular, biological, epidemiological, psychosocial, and clinical features of AIDS and its related diseases are reviewed. Chapters cover the following topics: the biological basis of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and AIDS (human T-lymphotropic retroviruses [HTLV-I, II, and III]), lymphadenopathy/AIDS virus as the prototype human lentivirus, molecular biology of the HTLV family, molecular biology of HTLV-III, animal models of HTLV-III/lymphadenopathy-associated virus (LAV) infection and AIDS, AIDS as a new kind of immunodeficiency, epidemiology of human retroviruses and related clinical conditions, psychiatric and psychosocial aspects of AIDS, spectrum of HTLV-III infection, pathology of AIDS, infectious complications of AIDS, an overview of classical and epidemic forms of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), KS in the setting of the AIDS pandemic, AIDS-related malignant B-cell lymphomas, approaches to diagnosis and outcome assessment in pediatric AIDS, HTLV-III/LAV-related neurological disease, dermatological (non-KS) manifestations associated with HTLV-III/LAV infection, rapid in vitro systems for assessing activity of agents against HTLV-III/LAV, and strategies for pharmacological intervention against HTLV-III/LAV.
