Abstract:
Early in the AIDS epidemic, it became apparent that individuals at risk for AIDS were also at risk for development of generalized lymphadenopathy of a reactive nature. The term persistent generalized lymphadenopathy (PGL) was used to characterize this disorder, described as generalized lymphadenopathy involving at least two or more extra-inguinal sites of three months' duration or longer, in the absence of any known specific cause of adenopathy. PGL is described in terms of histology, clinical, retroviral and immunologic characteristics, and its relationship to AIDS. Malignant lymphoma (CNS and systemic) associated with AIDS is discussed in relation to incidence rates, epidemiology, and pathologic features. The characteristics of CNS and systemic lymphomas are discussed; Hodgkin's disease and other malignancies in HIV-infected individuals are described (anal cancer, skin cancer, tongue cancer, lung cancer and testicular cancer). Many unusual cancers may be seen in HIV-infected patients. Although no epidemiologic link between these cancers and AIDS exists yet, it is possible that anogenital carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas of the tongue, and other such tumors may be increasing in patients at risk for AIDS.
