Abstract: This program for the Fourth International Conference on AIDS, held in Stockholm, Sweden from June 12-16, 1988, contains the abstracts of presentations given during the plenary sessions, workshops, round tables and poster sessions. The HIV infection pandemic represents a unique and major challenge to science and society. As more is learned of the medical, epidemiologic and social aspects of the problem, so the questions about the implications for the individual and society increase. The purpose of the conference was two-fold: (1) it served as a forum in which experts in specialized fields could meet and exchange information; and (2) it provided the opportunity for the biomedical and social sciences to come together to share experiences and approaches to scientific problems. The program covered nine major topics: (A) virology--ranging from molecular biology to virus isolation; (B) pathogenesis/immunology--from receptor molecules to oncology and neurology; (C) antiviral therapy--from chemistry to clinical trials; (D) epidemiology--from mathematical models to studies of prevalence; (E) problems in the developing world--from seroepidemiology to public health; (F) prevention--from vaccines to sex education and information; (G) clinical management--from bone marrow transplantation to clinical syndromes; (H) psychosocial aspects--from neuropsychiatry to iv drug abuse, behavior change and counseling; and (I) health care and society--from strategic planning and impact on society studies to nursing.
