Abstract: This volume describes the effects of HIV on the nervous system with the primary goal of providing rational approaches to the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and counseling of patients (pts) with neurological manifestations of AIDS. In addition, the findings and direction of research relevant to AIDS and the nervous system is presented. Topics include an overview of AIDS and the nervous system; neuroepidemiology of AIDS; CNS dysfunction in AIDS; peripheral nervous system dysfunction in AIDS; neurology of HIV infection; neuroophthalmology of AIDS; neuroradiology of AIDS; neuropathology of AIDS; primary infection with HIV; the AIDS dementia complex; opportunistic viral infections in AIDS; nonviral infections of the CNS in pts with AIDS; neoplasms of the CNS in AIDS; hospital epidemiology infection control precautions for HIV; neuropsychiatric aspects of AIDS; the biology of HIV and its role in neurological disease; neuroimmunology of HIV infection; implications of AIDS for neurological pathophysiology; and algorithms for the treatment of AIDS pts with neurological disease.
