Abstract: The skin may display a number of reaction patterns and lesions that are important to recognize, as they may reflect on internal cancer. Some skin processes or diseases linked with internal cancers may be either unassociated when age-matched controls are used or are only associated fortuitously. Syndromes of special interest in which cutaneous changes are associated with internal malignancies are considered, including both hereditary and acquired syndromes. Topics are as follows: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, Gardner's syndrome, Cowden's syndrome (multiple hamartoma syndrome), multiple endocrine neoplasia III, Torre syndrome, neurofibromatosis, nodular fat necrosis, acute neutrophilic dermatosis, glucagonoma syndrome, acquired ichthyosis, hypertrichosis lanuginosa acquisita, tylosis, epidermolysis bullosa acquisita, sign of Leser-Trelat, malignant acanthosis nigricans, cutaneous radiation damage overlying the thyroid, breasts, and other sites, cutaneous manifestations of AIDS, Bazex' syndrome (acrokeratosis neoplastica), and florid cutaneous papillomatosis. Clinical features of each of these syndromes are described and most are illustrated with photographs. (211 Refs)
