Abstract: Immunosuppression, due to many causes, has been associated with the occurrence of malignancies, especially lymphoma. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is characterized by the appearance of a serious opportunistic infection, Kaposi's sarcoma, primary brain lymphoma, or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma outside of the CNS. Presentation, diagnosis, and treatment are discussed for primary brain lymphoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma outside the CNS, Hodgkin's disease, and other tumors associated with AIDS. Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are a frequent manifestation of AIDS. These tumors may or may not be confined to the brain. Primary brain lymphomas are associated with an extremely poor prognosis. Hodgkin's disease is also seen in patients (pts) at risk for AIDS. Advanced (Stage IV) disease appears to be more frequent in these pts. Kaposi's sarcoma is principally found among homosexual men with AIDS and tends to disseminate widely. There is yet no ideal standard for therapy for pts with an AIDS-related tumor. Simultaneous treatment of human immunodeficiency virus may turn out to be an essential component of therapy. (24 Refs)
