Abstract: (Producer) Lectures contain instructional guides for the continuing education of medical technologists and technicians, most of whom took their original training before the AIDS virus was known. These include objectives, study questions and answers, and references that point the way to an understanding of how all areas of the clinical laboratory are utilized during the hospital management of AIDS patients. The histologist will see Kaposi's sarcoma, a cancer that occurs very frequently in AIDS patients but rarely under other circumstances. The microbiologist will encounter opportunistic infections such as pneumocystic pneumonia, an organism rarely causing disease in man unless am AIDS-like immunosuppression exists. The hematologist will note anemia and unusual white cell morphology in AIDS patients. The Blood Bank technologist may see unusual serological results caused by autoantibodies, and the immunologist will encounter the depressed cellular immunity which is the hallmark of AIDS.
