Abstract: The epidemiology of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is reviewed under the following headings: clinical classification, incidence and geographic distribution, age distribution, sex distribution, ethnic and genetic associations, associations between immunodeficiency and neoplasia, association with cytomegalovirus, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Although originally thought to be a rare disease in Europe and worldwide, it became clear by the 1960s that KS was a common health problem in certain regions of subsaharan Africa. The occurrence of KS in iatrogenically immunosuppressed patients was increasingly recognized in the 1970s. The current epidemic of KS in homosexual men and increasingly in heterosexual men and women who have AIDS underscores the need to further understand this multifaceted disease. (131 Refs)
