Abstract:
This volume presents proceedings of the 1986 ISIR-TNO (International Society for Interferon Research-Nederlandse Centrale Organisatie voor Toegepast-Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek) meeting on the interferon (IFN) system, held September 7-12, 1986 in Espoo, Finland. Major subject headings include the following: genes and proteins, modes of IFN action, receptors, induction, cell biology, immunology and interaction of IFNs with other lymphokines, animal models, and clinical studies of antitumor effects, antiviral effects, and effects on other diseases. The section on genes and proteins discusses the following: differential structures and activities of three IFN alpha 2 variants; and an IFN-like protein produced by peripheral blood mononuclear cells treated with inhibitors of transcription. The section on modes of action includes the interaction of IFN-alpha with IFN-sensitive and -resistant Daudi cells. A section on induction discusses the regulation of human fibroblast growth by autocrine IFN-beta; and biological activities of human IFN-beta. The cell biology section includes the long-term IFN effects on the phenotype of transformed and tumor cells; and a comparison of different modes of IFN delivery by tumor-specific monoclonal antibodies. The section on immunology includes the following: tumor necrosis factor (TNF), IFN-gamma, and their synergism; human cells treated with recombinant TNF; interactions of TNF, IFN, and interleukin-1; IFN-gamma regulation of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor in human monocytes; and IFN regulation of major histocompatibility class I gene expression. The animal studies section discusses phospholipid metabolism in Friend leukemia cell tumors; antitumor effects of IFN-gamma in rats; mechanisms of anticancer action of IFNs on human tumor xenografts; and transgenic mice carrying exogenous IFN genes. The clinical studies section includes the treatment of malignant endocrine pancreatic tumors with human leukocyte IFN; efficacy of IFNs (including Wellferon) in treatment of hairy cell leukemia, Kaposi's sarcoma, multiple myeloma, malignant melanoma, lung cancer, malignant glioma, and other malignancies; IFNs in AIDS, ARC and cancer patients; and activity of intralesional IFN-alpha-2B in viral and malignant skin diseases.
