Abstract: Important Advances in Oncology 1987 is the third in a series of annual volumes, each of which contains the most significant changes in oncologic research and practice that have taken place during the preceding year. For this volume, basic research has been selected that describes studies related to immunoglobulin and T-cell receptor genes as they reveal the clonality, lineage, and translocations of lymphoid neoplasms; pleiotropic drug resistance; monoclonal antibodies in the management of epithelial ovarian carcinoma; papilloma viruses; peptide growth factors; and proto-oncogene expression and the development of tumor markers. A review of work on tumor necrosis factor is included because of the substantial recent interest and activity in studying this substance despite the early stage in its clinical development. The clinical progress section contains discussions of nuclear magnetic resonance imaging; induction chemotherapy as initial treatment for advanced head and neck cancer; etiology of colorectal cancer; high-dose chemotherapy with bone marrow support for solid tumors; brachytherapy; PDQ--an innovation in dissemination of cancer information; nonoperative therapy of biliary obstruction; and progress in the development of antiviral therapy for human T cell lymphotropic virus-III-associated diseases.
