THE ROLE OF THE NURSE IN THE PREVENTION OF AIDS/KAPOSI'S SARCOMA

Cancer Nurs; 10(Suppl 1):88-90 1987. Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICDB/88645120
Wells RJ; Oncology Nursing, Royal Coll. of Nursing, London, UK

Abstract: The characteristics (eg, the causative agent, mode of transmission, and public impact) of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are reviewed briefly, and several activities are described that nurses and other health professionals can employ to help protect the public from AIDS. The routes of transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus, which include blood, semen, vaginal secretions, gross body fluids and breast milk, demand that an educational program to prevent the spread of AIDS must be very specific, unequivocal, and nonjudgmental. Among the goals to be pursued are ensuring that transfused materials are pure, adopting tactics to contain the increase in the number of iv drug users, and educating patients in safe sex practices.
