Abstract: The authors have studied the clinical aspects and mechanism of the thrombocytopenia observed in heroin addicts in the light of recently published data. This relatively frequent complication of intravenous drug addiction must be related to the immunological disturbances caused by carriage of the HIV virus. The evolutive characteristics of thrombocytopenia in such cases and the therapeutic implications of this association between thrombocytopenic purpura and acquired immunodeficiency are discussed.
