Abstract: This volume is a collection of the papers presented at the International Ares-Serono Symposium on the Interferon (IFN) System, held in Rome on May 8-11, 1985. The following are the major section headings: production and characterization, physiology and toxicology, antiviral activity, receptors, clinical trials, antitumor activity, and effects on cell functions. Among the subjects covered are molecular mechanisms of IFN action, IFN effects on virus-infected cells and the prevention or treatment of viral infections, IFN effects on protozoan infections, human genes involved in IFN action, epitope analysis of human IFN-alpha subtypes by monoclonal antibodies, the effect of IFNs on chronic hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, multiple myeloma, hairy cell leukemia, and cervical epithelial neoplasia associated with papilloma virus infection, long-term effects of IFN on the phenotype of transformed and tumor cells, effects of IFNs on human choriocarcinoma cells, eradication of fibrosarcoma using IFNs, enhancement by hyperthermia of the antiproliferative activity of murine IFNs, cytolysis of cultured human tumor cells by IFN-gamma-treated human peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes, synergism of IFN with tumor necrosis factor, inhibition of macrophage growth by IFN, lysis of lung carcinoma cells by natural killer cells augmented with IFN-beta, but not IFN-alpha, Friend leukemia cell clones resistant to murine IFNs, immunoregulatory effects of IFNs in man, IFN-gamma production in patients with primary immunodeficiency, inhibition by IFNs of cell growth, oncogene expression, oncogene-induced transformation, and differential control of c-myc proto-oncogene and histocompatibility antigens expression by IFNs.
