Abstract:
This volume contains the proceedings of the 1986 International Symposium on Medical Virology, held November 12-14, 1986, in Anaheim, California. The symposium was an attempt to bring together individuals working in different areas of medical virology to exchange information that will help in effective control of viral diseases. Full length papers presented include prospects for application of monoclonal antibody (MoAb) technology and MoAb-drug conjugates to viral disease; clinical presentation and laboratory diagnosis of Chlamydia infections; perturbation of host cell function during persistent viral infection; slow infections of the CNS; clinical and immunopathological manifestations and detection of Epstein-Barr virus infection in immune-deficient patients; hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (global epidemiology and ecology of hantavirus infections); natural history of viruses of the intestine in contrasting ecosystems; biology, pathogenic potential, and diagnosis of papovaviruses; DNA viruses in anogenital cancer; type D virus immunosuppression in captive macaques; human T lymphotropic retroviruses; viral receptors as a novel approach for the prevention of human rhinovirus infection; the role of interferon (IFN) in resistance to infection and toxic effects of endogenous and exogenous IFN; and amantadine and rimantadine in the prophylaxis and therapy of influenza A. In addition, abstracts are included of presentations covering the following topics: rapid detection of cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus (HSV) isolation, direct detection of proteins associated with human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) III, detection of antibody to HIV, influenza surveillance, serodiagnosis of rabies, detection of group A rotaviruses, the Enzygnost test as a screen for varicella zoster virus, evidence of HTLVs in systemic lupus erythematosus, prevalence of AIDS-associated retroviruses in the Naples (Italy) area, transmission route of feline retrovirus infection in cats, prevention of CMV infection in immunocompromised children, CMV infection in hospitals, Hemophilus influenzae B infection and CMV, MoAbs against HTLV III, rubella virus interactions with human lymphoid cells, acyclovir in HSV encephalitis, evaluation of 3-deazacytidine and 3-deazauridines, antiviral activity of recombinant murine tumor necrosis factor-alpha and recombinant murine IFN-gamma.
