Abstract:
The present book discusses current trends in the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases that affect the eye under the following chapter headings: ophthalmia neonatorum, inclusion conjunctivitis, herpes simplex virus, syphilis, viral venereal warts and Molluscum contagiosum, the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and ophthalmic disorders associated with AIDS. An in-depth look into the ocular mechanisms of sexually transmitted disorders is included. Recent breakthroughs in herpetic recurrent disease processes, modern techniques of rapid laboratory diagnosis, and current trends in cellular immunology, and the epidemiology of AIDS are discussed. Part of the text stems from an American Medical Association symposium on the ocular manifestations of sexually transmitted diseases. The final chapter on the ocular manifestations associated with AIDS provides comprehensive current information on four major categories of manifestations: lesions attributable to retinal vascular disease, opportunistic infections of the eye, neoplasms of the ocular surface and orbit, and neuro-ophthalmic abnormalities. None of the disorders are unique to AIDS, but many are so uncommon in non-AIDS patients that they may be unfamiliar to most ophthalmologists. The information provided on AIDS, as well as the fact that almost all of the diseases, once the etiologic agent has been identified, lend themselves to rapid resolution following antimicrobial therapy make the present work suitable for residents and practicing ophthalmologists.
