Abstract: Type D retrovirus has been readily isolated from macaques that had a spontaneous immunodeficiency syndrome; however, experimental infection of naive macaques with D/New England has not induced the immunodeficiency syndrome. Sufficient numbers of Macaca cyclopis are not available to determine whether they are more susceptible to disease induction by type D retrovirus; also, the extent of type D retrovirus in the New England Region Primate Research Center (NERPRC) macaque colony is yet unknown. If infection were confined primarily to the disease population, this would provide strong evidence for a causative role of type D retrovirus in disease. If, however, the rate of infection in the colony is high, as with cytomegalovirus, it would not be surprising to recover the virus with high frequency from immunodeficient animals. Type D retrovirus could play an important role in the pathogenesis of the disease without being primarily responsible for the immunodeficiency. Serologic screening has provided evidence for prior infection with a human T cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-related virus among at least some NERPRC macaques with lymphoproliferative and immunodeficiency disorders.
