Abstract: The first case of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in Minas Gerais, Brazil, is reported. A 56-yr-old homosexual male presented with Kaposi's sarcoma of the arms which rapidly disseminated over his entire body. He denied any somatic symptoms or travel outside the city in the last 10 years. Within 5 mo he developed edema, weight loss, fever, lymphadenopathy, anemia, hepatomegaly and fatigue. Immunological tests at that time suggested a diagnosis of AIDS. The patient died 9 mo after the initial symptoms; no autopsy was performed. (19 Refs)
