Abstract: Proceedings of the Seventh Bristol-Myers Symposium on Cancer Research are reported under the following headings: genetics, cell differentiation, and cancer; synthesis of adenoviral DNA with purified proteins; left-handed Z-DNA and chromatin; factors involved in elongation and termination of bacterial and mammalian transcription; lambda integrative recombination: pathways for synapsis and strand exchange; organization and functional relationships of lethal genes in mouse t haplotypes; control of gene expression during terminal cell differentiation; notes on tissue-specific gene control; activation of c-myc in viral and nonviral neoplasia; retroviruses and cancer genes; differences in the biological function of viral and cellular src genes; function of yeast RAS genes; the neu oncogene encodes a cell surface protein with properties of a growth factor receptor; cooperativity between 'primary' and 'auxiliary' oncogenes of defective avian leukemia viruses; and the family of human T-lymphotropic retroviruses called human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus (HTLV): their role in lymphoid malignancies and lymphosuppressive disorders (AIDS).
