Abstract:
Contributions of modern biology to medicine, as discussed by various investigators who attended a Serono International Symposium, are organized in this book under different section headings. The immune response in health and disease is discussed under the following titles: molecular organization of humoral immunity: novel features of immunoglobulin gene expression and possible implications for oncogenesis; on the complexity of interferon-mediated natural killer (NK) regulation; biological role of major transplantation antigens in T cell self-recognition: possible consequences in clinical medicine; T cell subsets and their functions in primary immunodeficiencies; and non-infectious cofactors in the etiology of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Titles in the section on biological response modifiers are as follows: thymosin peptides: modulation of host defense by neuroendocrine circuits; growth factors: their production by antigen-activated T cell clones and their use for the in vitro analysis of human T cells and B cells; cloning, expression, and characterization of human interferon-beta, interferon-gamma, and interleukin 2 (IL2) genes; interferons as activators of gene expression: induction of messenger RNAs (mRNAs) specifying major histocompatibility complex antigens, (2'-5')(A)n synthetases, and proteins of unknown function; and IL2 in human immunodeficiency states: partial correction of T cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo by highly purified human lymphocyte IL2. Globinopathies are discussed under the following headings: pathogenesis of abnormal globin mRNA metabolism in beta-thalassemias; and regulation of fetal hemoglobin synthesis. The molecular and cellular pathogenesis, and etiology of malignant diseases are described under the following headings: the role of retroviruses and onc genes in some human leukemias and lymphomas; and alterations in the NK-cell population: phenotypic heterogeneity of granular lymphocytes in lymphoproliferative disorders. Diagnostic markers and new approaches to therapy are detailed under the following headings: differentiation antigens and lymphopoiesis; application of surface markers in the diagnosis of leukemia; differentiation of pre-B and pre-T leukemic cell lines by phorbol ester; definition and analysis of human cancer antigens with mouse and human monoclonal antibodies; and growth and differentiation factors in therapy: regulation of hematopoiesis and the normalization of leukemic cells.
