Cancer - Principles and Practice of Oncology. 2nd Edition. DeVita VT Jr, Hellman S, Rosenberg SA, eds. Philadelphia, Lippincott, p. 1623-709, 1985.. Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICDB/86620340 DeVita VT Jr; Jaffe ES; Hellman S; NCI, Bethesda, MD
Abstract:
Hodgkin's disease and the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are reviewed under the following headings: etiology and epidemiology, microscopic anatomy of normal lymphoid tissues (lymphoreticular cell surface markers; identification of lymphoreticular cells with monoclonal antibodies), cellular origin of the lymphomas (pathology of lymphomas; pathology of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma; malignant lymphoma; follicular lymphomas; diffusive aggressive lymphomas), natural history of the lymphomas (superficial lymph node presentations; differential diagnosis of superficial lymphadenopathy; thoracic presentations; abdominal presentations; other clinical presentations), disease evolution (Hodgkin's disease; the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas), diagnosis and staging of lymphomas (Hodgkin's disease; staging laparotomy; staging of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas), clinical staging, immunological abnormalities in patients (pts) with lymphoma (Hodgkin's disease; non-Hodgkin's lymphomas; clinical immunologic disorders), radiation therapy of Hodgkin's disease (results; complications), chemotherapy of lymphomas (use of single-agent chemotherapy to manage Hodgkin's disease), use of single-agent chemotherapy to manage non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (new antitumor drugs in pts with lymphoma; combination chemotherapy of Hodgkin's disease; salvage therapy of Hodgkin's disease; comparative studies of combination chemotherapy for Hodgkin's disease; administration of combination chemotherapy; combined radiation and chemotherapy in Hodgkin's disease Stages I, II, and III), current recommendations for treatment of Hodgkin's disease by stage, the place of radiation in the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, combination chemotherapy of the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (therapy of advanced, diffuse aggressive lymphomas), and special consideration in the treatment of pts with advanced, diffuse aggressive lymphomas. At present, 70% of all pts with Hodgkin's disease and more than half of those with the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are curable. (768 Refs)
