Abstract: The clinical, experimental, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of pneumocystis, the most serious infection in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), are discussed under the following headings: historical perspective; experimental models of Pneumocystis carinii infections; interactions between Pneumocystis carinii and phagocytic cells; serology of Pneumocystis carinii; in vitro cultivation of pneumocystis; clinical aspects of pneumocystosis in man: epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and sequelae: treatment and prevention of Pneumocystis carinii infection; and AIDS, Kaposi's sarcoma, and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. All aspects of the disease are covered ranging from the historical background, through its association with congenital immunodeficiencies, cancer therapy, organ transplantation, and immunosuppressive treatment, up to and including its connection with the current AIDS epidemic. A rational basis for treatment and prophylaxis is provided. The book is intended as an essential reference for infectious disease specialists, pulmonologists, microbiologists and parasitologists, pathologists, epidemiologists, and immunologists.
