THE RELATIONSHIP OF CYTOMEGALOVIRUS TO KAPOSI'S SARCOMA

Abstract: Tumor cells from a homosexual man with Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and testicular carcinoma were studied for evidence of the presence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) nucleic acids. The patient (pt) was a 35-yr-old white Jewish male who underwent left radical orchiectomy for embryonal carcinoma of the testis; one retroperitoneal lymph node was positive for metastasis. The pt was treated with vinblastine, actinomycin D, bleomycin, and chlorambucil. After 2 yr, there was no evidence of recurrent carcinoma, but a rectal lesion was noted that was diagnosed by biopsy as KS. In the subsequent month, the pt developed skin and mucosal lesions and generalized lymphadenopathy. Sections of a skin nodule were studied by an in situ hybridization technique, using viral DNA probes for CMV and herpes simplex virus Type 2 (HSV-2). Staining of the tumor cells was positive for CMV but negative for HSV-2, while all normal tissues were negative for both viruses. The authors concluded that CMV was present in this sample of KS tumor tissue, and they speculate that CMV may be an etiologic factor in the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. (52 Refs)
