Abstract: As tests for premonitory signs of risk of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), serum levels of interferon-alpha (IFN) were measured in 25 AIDS patients (pts), 76 healthy homosexual males, and 24 healthy heterosexual males. The method of measurement involved treating trisomy 21 fibroblast cultures with serial dilutions of serum, then challenging the cells with encephalomyelitis virus. The IFN was detected in all of the AIDS pts, in 52 of the homosexual controls and in 1 of the heterosexual controls. The mean IFN titer was 4 units for healthy heterosexuals, 31 for healthy homosexuals, 123 for pts with AIDS and opportunistic infection, and 262 for pts with AIDS and Kaposi's sarcoma. Five healthy homosexual controls who had the highest IFN titers all developed AIDS within 17 mo. The authors conclude that IFN is associated with AIDS and that high IFN titers in homosexuals at risk may predict the development of AIDS. IFN is hypothesized to be a product induced by the AIDS agent, or a consequence of autoimmune phenomena. (8 Refs)
