Abstract: The biology of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and the relationship of this tumor to the current epidemic of T cell immune deficiency are reviewed. Cytological origins, clinical features, pathogenesis, and therapy of KS are discussed. KS is thought to begin in the mid-dermis and extend to the epidermis. KS is observed in many cases of malignant diseases associated with immunodeficiency (eg lymphoma, thymoma, and multiple myeloma). KS occurs in a number of clinical forms related to the geographic and epidemiological setting. Four major stages of KS are accepted by most specialists in the field. Tumorigenesis of KS may be due to a virus and the immunodeficient state. (23 Refs)
