Abstract:
Recent developments in dermatology are reviewed. Reports have noted the occurrence of Kaposi's sarcoma, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, cutaneous candidiasis, and multiple virus infections among homosexuals. These disorders apparently result from an immunodeficiency. Topics under current study include the relationship between steroids and cellular cohesion of the cornified epidermis, cutaneous effects of biliary cirrhosis, the relationship between the infraorbital Dennie-Morgan fold and atopic dermatitis, endocrine disorders producing acne vulgaris, cutaneous effects of oral retinoids, and contact dermatitis. Associations between mycosis fungoides and glomerulopathy, benign pigmented nevi of the eyelid and malignant degeneration, and epidermal necrosis and treatment with phenytoin are discussed. New treatments for blister-forming disorders are summarized. Case reports and diagnostic criteria are reviewed for viral infections, urticaria, cutaneous T-cell diseases, verruciform xanthoma, and various dermatoses. A study of psoriasis patients indicates that local application of coal-tar preparations is not associated with an increased incidence of skin cancers. Cutaneous side-effects of various drugs are discussed. Research into treatment of cutaneous disorders is reviewed. (47 Refs)
