Abstract: The liver, thymus and associated tumor tissue (adenocarcinoma of the stomach in 3 patients and medulloblastoma of the cerebellum in 1 patient) from five autopsy patients with ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) was examined for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method. AFP and HBsAg was detected in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes from all five patients but was not detected in the thymus or tumor tissue. The presence of AFP is consistent with the suggestion that AT patients have an underdevelopment of the liver. More striking is the detection of HBsAg in the absence of clinical or histological evidence of acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in these patients. It is possible that persistent infection with HBV may play a role in the etiology and pathogenesis of AT. AT may be unique among immunodeficiency diseases and HBV carriers in its association with both AFP and HBsAg in the liver. (17 Refs)
