Abstract: Loss of immunocompetency and increased frequency of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in homosexuals is discussed. High serum antibody titers to cytomegalovirus (CMV) were present in all KS patients in whom it was tested. Homosexuals have long been known to have an increased incidence of many infections including hepatitis A and B, amebiasis, giardiasis, gonorrhea, syphilis, condylomata acuminata, and CMV. CMV is believed to be sexually transmitted, and this virus has been demonstrated in both urine and semen. CMV has been shown to cause immunosuppression in mice and human beings. Whether CMV is oncogenic is not known. (12 Refs)
