Abstract: An attempt was made to immunize C3H/Bi mice against a syngeneic Gross leukemia virus-induced ascites lymphoma by repeated injections of tumor cell membranes containing adsorbed strain Cal Newcastle disease virus, strain Sendai parainfluenza I virus (SiV), or strain WSN influenza virus (WSN). Mice receiving the membranes with adsorbed viral antigens developed some immunity to challenge with 50, 100, or 500 tumor cells. However, autoimmunity appeared regularly and there were significant numbers of deaths from autoimmune disease. In one experiment, membranes treated with SiV or WSN failed to produce fatal autoimmune disease, but the survival rate after a minimal challenge dose was equal to or less than the control rate. In another experiment, the mortality was lower in mice injected with untreated lymphoma cell membranes than in the mice that received no injection. Complement-fixing and cytotoxic antibodies against uninfected lymphoma and splenocytes were demonstrated in the immunized mice. Autoantibodies to syngeneic RBC were demonstrated by hemolysis in the presence of guinea pig complement. These observations imply that autoimmunity may interfere with tumor immunity. (19 Refs)
