Alex Lawson, co-founder of D.C. Fights Back, one of several organizations sponsoring the event, said at-large Council candidates invited to the event will have a chance to speak about their plans to fight HIV, but the focus will not be on them.
"The point is to get them to listen," he said. "We're just ensuring that the at-large candidates understand the gravity of the situation."
Candidates expected to appear include: Kwame Brown, Michael Brown, Dee Hunter, Patrick Mara and Carol Schwartz.
An estimated 17,000 to 25,000 people living in D.C. have HIV, according to local health statistics. The city has the nation's highest rate of AIDS cases, with a calculated 179 cases per 100,000 people. Lawson said D.C. residents who are living with HIV or AIDS will speak first to the candidates. Audience members will then have an opportunity to address or question the candidates.
"There are some folks who have been long supporters of the HIV community and fighting the epidemic, and we know that and we will give them an opportunity to talk about their accomplishments," he said. "But it's also important for them to hear about what is going on day to day."
Lawson said the event, which will be held at 1725 I Street N.W., begins at 1 p.m. and is expected to last about three hours.
