Huntington Hospital HIV Physician Leads Fourth Trip to Africa

PRNewswire - December 27, 2005

PASADENA, Calif., Dec. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- For the fourth time in the new millennium, a team of Huntington Hospital medical professionals, led by Kimberly Shriner, MD, will travel to Arusha, Tanzania (East Africa) bringing medical care and supplies to the Upone Charitable Medical Centre, an outpatient AIDS clinic. The Huntington team will provide basic health care/medication, HIV and anti-retroviral education and much needed manpower and support to the impoverished community.

"We are thrilled to be making our fourth trip to Tanzania in January," said Shriner. "This time, in addition to our work with Upone, a new focus will be helping to open an outpatient AIDS clinic in nearby Moivaro Village. A building has been made available and we will spend lots of time preparing the clinic to open its doors to the community."

Shriner and her team have worked closely with Dr. Solomen Ole Logilunore, since the inception of the sister clinic project in 2004. "This relationship has been as valuable to the healthcare practitioners at Huntington as it's been to the Africans. We learn so much about the human spirit from these people. My staff feels empowered and my patients feel a bond with the African community they hear so much about."

Twenty-five million people are infected with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. Over 12 million African children are orphaned due to this devastating disease. On April 23, 2006, The Phil Simon Clinic (HIV clinic) at Huntington Hospital will hold its second annual event at the Castle Green Hotel in Pasadena celebrating the children of Africa with a party fundraiser themed Children Helping Children.
