ESSENCE Magazine Makes 100% Commitment to the Fight Against HIV/AIDS Joins Forces With The Black Aids Institute In The Our People. Our Problem. Our Solution. Awareness Campaign

PRNewswire - November 15, 2004

-- Actress and Comedienne Mo'Nique Will Serve As Campaign Spokesperson

NEW YORK, Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- ESSENCE will observe the holiday season with a special HIV/AIDS awareness campaign called, "Our People. Our Problem. Our Solution." The preeminent magazine for African-American women has teamed up with The Black AIDS Institute (BAI), the only national HIV/AIDS public policy, training, and mobilization center in the United States focused exclusively on Black people. ESSENCE will donate 100% of the net proceeds from every new subscription ordered during the holiday season-from November 15th through December 31st-to BAI. This subscription opportunity is uniquely available by calling (800) 526-4525 or visiting http://www.essence.com/blackaids.

Among women in the United States, 72% of all new HIV/AIDS cases are Black women. ESSENCE shares BAI's commitment to stop this pandemic in Black communities. The objective of this awareness campaign is to expose the devastation HIV/AIDS is causing among African-American women in the U.S., and to raise $250,000 for Black AIDS awareness efforts. Actress and comedienne Mo'Nique will serve as the spokesperson for this awareness campaign.

"ESSENCE always seeks to educate our readers about HIV/AIDS, and we are proud to partner with BAI in this critical effort," said Diane Weathers, editor-in-chief of ESSENCE magazine. "Mo'Nique's connection to the African- American community, and her passion to increase the consciousness, makes her the perfect spokesperson for this important cause. It is our hope that people will support this campaign by giving the gift of life during this holiday season."

"HIV/AIDS is devastating Black families all over America," said Phill Wilson, executive director of the Black AIDS Institute. "There is a lack of awareness about the magnitude of the AIDS epidemic in African-American communities that speaks volumes about the low priority our government places on the lives of African-Americans. We're asking everyone to get involved and to be a part of the solution to this crisis."
