PRNewswire - December 5, 2003

-- Leading Community Organizations to Host Event With Free HIV Testing, Information Booths and Theatrical Presentations on December 5 At Romona Hall in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Planned Parenthood Los Angeles' (PPLA) Promotoras Comunitarias, one of L.A. County's leading Latino family outreach programs, with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, Clinica Monsenor Oscar Romero and other community health organizations will be at Romona Hall located at 4580 N. Figueroa in Los Angeles today, December 5, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. to provide free HIV testing, information, and entertainment.

The event aims to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS in the Latino community and educate people on how to protect themselves. In commemoration of the World AIDS Day this past Monday, Planned Parenthood Los Angeles and others want to remind the Latino community of the dangers of contracting HIV/AIDS and how they can help protect themselves. Although Latinos represent only 14% of the U.S. population, Latinos represent 18% of reported AIDS cases and 19% of the estimated new infections each year.

About Promotoras Comunitarias

A program of PPLA, Promotoras Comunitarias is a culturally sensitive outreach program aimed at empowering Latina women with knowledge about health issues that impact their lives and the lives of their families. Through the development of their own communication and leadership skills, these women serve as role models and educators to their friends, families, and neighbors.

The goal of the program is to help Latina women understand that the knowledge and skills they have are important in their own lives as independent women, workers, wives and mothers.
