New Drug Approved for Treating HIV Children With Depression

PRNewswire - November 17, 2003

BUCHAREST, Romania, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Cortisol Research International-Romania announced today that the National Medicines Agency of Romania has approved the use of its drug, VIRUCORT 50 in the treatment of depression of HIV-positive children. This drug represents a new approach in the fight against AIDS and potentially prevents HIV+ children from progressing to AIDS.

In clinical trials, children who received VIRUCORT 50 in combination with anti-HIV medications demonstrated favorable results in depression symptoms, certain immunological improvements, and a resumption of HIV-stunted growth and weight gain.

The main ingredient of VIRUCORT 50 is Procaine HC1; reported in the medical press to be a reversible, selective inhibitor of monoamine oxidase (MAO), the "enzyme of depression," and affecting positively three neurotransmitters -- serotonin, norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine.

VIRUCORT is an antidepressant used in the treatment of HIV+ children, and is practically devoid of any side effects even after being administered for many months.

The VIRUCORT results seem to confirm articles published in the medical press which indicate that depression and depression-induced impaired immune systems are factors contributing to the progression of patients from HIV to AIDS, and conversely, that by treating these conditions, the slide into AIDS might be delayed or even prevented.

Worldwide there are 40 million HIV and AIDS patients; of these, around 3 million are children. From the total of 40 million, 36 million are HIV+ and millions of them are continually crossing the barrier to become AIDS patients, including a great number of children.

VIRUCORT 50 was developed by Alfred Sapse, MD(r), a Romanian born U.S. scientist and a Las Vegas resident, together with a Romanian team of scientists and physicians. Clinical trials were done by a team that included Prof.dr. Augustin Cupsa, Dr. Paul Marinescu, Prof.dr. Nicolae Voiculetz, and the experimental and pharmaceutical studies were performed and developed in the National Institute for Chemical-Pharmaceutical Research and Development (ICCF) in Bucharest, Romania, under the direction of dr. Sultana Nita; general coordinator, of the Romanian team was Prpf. dr. Sabin Cinca.

VIRUCORT 50 is available for marketing in Romania and soon thereafter, in other interested countries.
